Construction debris has significant potential value. Its reuse reduces the strain on the environment, stimulates the local economy and provides safe, affordable housing for those at the bottom of the social ladder. In the Netherlands, we use debris as a foundation under roads, dikes and in sound barriers. But houses are usually constructed using new raw materials. The same companies simply push aside construction debris in disaster areas and emerging economies, resulting in environmental pollution and a destruction of capital. What they fail to realise is that construction debris is an excellent material for construction.
